Before we learn how to create a well designed line chart in Excel, we must know what is line chart and when we need this.

What is a Line Chart?
A linear graph which shows a series of data points connected by straight lines. Line chart is a graphical object used to represent the data in Excel spreadsheet.
When can we use line chart?
- You want to show a trend over time like days, months or years. In this case, the time values would be your categories.
- The order of your categories (i.e.: time values) is most important.
Think you want to compare the monthly sale trends of your products like TV, Mobile and Tablet in a year. A line chart is better for this type of data.
You’ll need some data, of course! Start a new spreadsheet and enter the same data as above picture:
Now let’s go through the following steps to create a line chart with our created table of product sale:
Step 1: Highlight the whole table that you would like to use for the line chart. In this example, we have selected the range A1:D13.
Step 2: Select the Insert tab from the top of the screen of Excel Interface.
Step 3: Click on Line Chart button from the Charts group.
Step 4: Select a chart from the drop down menu of Line chart. In here, we have selected Line with Markers from 2-D Line section as like above picture.
When you hover over each choice of a line from the drop-down menu, it will show you a preview of your data in the highlighted chart format inside the spreadsheet!
Step 5: Now we see the line chart appear in your spreadsheet showing the trend for 3 products. This line chart is representing the trend for Mobile, Tablet and TV. They are showing as different series of data points with 3 different colors for Mobile, Tablet and TV.
This Line chart has 3 parts:
- Chart Title
- Plot Area
There are 2 axes In a Line chart. The axis values for each product sales are displayed on the left side of the graph. In the bottom side, it is showing Months.
Step 6: Change the Title of this Line chart by click inside the Chart Title box. Now change the title as Product Sale Trends.
Our line chart is created successfully! Now, Let’s get some TIPS to decorated our created line chart and make this more attractive!
Tips 1: How to change the style and background?!
Click on the chart background, then Chart Styles button will be appeared. Using this tool we can change the color of line and also the style of whole background of the line chart. Then click on the Chart Style button to see the styles listed inside the Chart Styles as like above picture. Here we have selected the style which is showing the value inside each vertex point.
Tips 2: How to hide a particular Series and category?!
Click on the chart background, then Chart Filters button will be appeared. It will show the list of category and series of the line chart with Check/Uncheck option. Now If we uncheck January from Category and Mobile from series, then both of them will be disappear from our line chart after click Apply.
Tips 3: How to style Plot Area using Plot Area properties?!
If you double click on Plot Area, you will get plot area properties on the right side of the excel interface to change the plot line style, background and shape, color and much more.
Task: Same for another elements like Chart title, Legend you will get their properties with huge options when double click on them.
Tips 4: Change Design?!
Click on the Line Chart then a new Tab group named Chart Tools will be appeared on the upper side of excel Interface like above image. Chart Tools contain 2 tabs named Design and Format. Using Design tab we can change or use any design for our line chart. In other hand using Format tab we can change inside the line chart like Font style, color and much more.
