Alteryx is a self-service data analytics tool used to prepare, blend and transform the data to perform analysis. We have provided a systematic learning approach to learning Alteryx online.
For learning Alteryx online in a better way, the course is divided into 5 modules. The following are the 5 modules;
- Module 1: Why Alteryx
- Module 2: Project #1:US Sales By 4 Business Segments
- Module 3: Getting Started with Shortcuts
- Module 4: Project #2
- Module 5: Tips and Tricks
As you can recognize, I included 2 projects in learning modules. These projects are included intentionally to give you a gist of applying whatever you will be learning for real-life application scenarios.
Let us go through each module one by one in detail:
Module 1: Why Alteryx
Lesson 1: Revolutionizing your Data using Alteryx – Why Alteryx
In this video, the shortcomings of Excel are stated that are you need to copy, paste and repeat these things, again and again, Excel slows down if it is used with VLOOKUPS and SUMIFs, Excel cannot handle more than 1 million rows of data, it cannot do automation without coding, and many more. Then it explains with an example that how using Alteryx these shortcomings of Excel can be overcome easily. It also mentions that Power Query is learned after Excel and then Alteryx.
Lesson 2: Connecting Excel to Power Query
In this video, the working of Power Query is stated and how it overcomes the shortcomings of Excel. It also shows how manually most of the things are done by Power Query to get the data in a proper format. It then comes to the reasoning why Alteryx is important. For explaining this factor, the trainer took the example of two companies – Book my Show and Coco-Cola.
For these companies it is very important to handle large data volumes, Sped is required, Frequent refreshes are done, It needs predictive analysis of data, Most of the times it requires the data in such a way that it can be sent to visualization tools for visualizations, all this is possible only through Alteryx.
Lesson 3: Getting to know the Alteryx User Interface
In this video, it is explained how the transition occurs from Excel to Power Query and from Power Query to Alteryx. The main reason the user uses Alteryx is for Analytics. To Explain the Alteryx interface properly it is divided in to 5 segments. The first segment is called a tool pallet from where the desired tools can be drag and dropped on the working area. The second segment is called Tool Search Box.
If you are not able to find any tool on the tool pallet, you can search here by typing it. The third segment that is the working area is called Canvas. The fourth segment is called as configuration Panel generally known as a settings box of tools. The fifth segment is the result window which will brief you about the result.
Module 2: Project #1:US Sales By 4 Business Segments
Lesson 4: US Sales By 4 Business Segments
In this video, an example of US Sales by 4 Business Segments is taken to explain the working of Alteryx. It explains the full workflow of the process. The first tool of the workflow is the input tool which brings the data files to the workflow. If we want to view the input data files the brows tool is used. Then again one more input tool is added to the workflow at the bottom to add the file from another segment.
The to add more add on and perform functions a multi-row function is added to the bottom input data. Then select tool is added to the first input data. Then a joining tool is added and the two-input data are connected to it. In this way, the rest of the tools are dragged and dropped to create a full workflow. The workflow is designed to get the output of a number of accessories by its segments like bikes, accessories, clothing, and components.
Lesson 5: Download Case Study
In this video, to practice on your own you can download the Case study file
Module 3: Getting Started with Shortcuts
Lesson 6: Alteryx Download Link and Resources
In this subsection of the module, links are provided to download Alteryx, Alteryx tools Cheat Sheet, Alteryx guide for Excel users and Alteryx Tricks 2017.
Lesson 7: Three easy ways to learn Alteryx
In this video, three easy ways to learn Alteryx is explained. The first step states that you can hover over the tools from the tools pallet and it shows its description name and how it is used. The second method states that as a user you will know what kind of workflow you want to design you can search for that kind of sample workflows which will build the workflow on your canvas along with the detailed explanation of all the tools included and their functions.
The third way states that if you have forgotten under what tab the tool was placed and you know the first few letters of the tool then you can easily search it from the search tool option.
Lesson 8: Top 15 shortcuts of Alteryx
In this video, the top 15 shortcut keys of Alteryx are discussed. They are –
- Add browse tool by Ctrl + Shift + B,
- To run or stop the workflow by Ctrl + R,
- Select all items by Ctrl + A,
- Deselect all items by Ctrl + D,
- Align tools vertically by Ctrl + Shift ++,
- Align tools horizontally by Ctrl + Shift +-,
- Show toolbar using Ctrl + Alt + B,
- Show tool pallet by Ctrl + Alt + T,
- Show overview by Ctrl + Alt + V,
- Show results window by Ctrl + Alt + R,
- Show properties window by Ctrl + Alt +C,
- Show Interface Designer by Ctrl + Alt + D,
- Move between the active workflows Ctrl + Tab,

7 Steps to Successful Data Blending for Excel and
Tools Cheat Sheet.
Module 4: Project #2
Lesson 10: Download Case Study
In this file, there is a link provided to download the case study file of the retail data sample.
Lesson 11: Retail Data Set
In this video, a workflow is explained in detail to get the output as invoices for each of the data along with the order quantity from a particular country.
Module 5: Tips and Tricks
Lesson 12: How to Combine Data from Multiple Files (XLSX, CSV)
In this video, the process of combining data from multiple files is explained. It can be achieved in three ways as follows:
- Files should be in common folder
- Sheet name has to be common
- Column sequence has to be same
Lesson 13: Use Data Profiling Feature of the Browse Tool to Understand Data Quality
In this video, data profiling of browse tools is used. The browse tool helps to display from a connected tool. In actual sense it is used to understand the quality of data like data profile information, maps, report snippets and behavioral analysis of information. The browse tool can be directly added to the workflow by pressing Ctrl + Shift + B.
Lesson 14: Use the Data Cleansing Tool to Improve Data Quality
In this video, how the data cleansing tool cleans the data to improve the quality of data, is explained. By definition data cleansing means to fix common data quality issues using a variety of parameters. It helps us to Replace null values, modify the case, remove unwanted characters across the fields you select, string or numeric, and trim leading/trailing whitespaces.
Lesson 15: Use Container Tool to isolate/ disable a section of the process of the workflow
In this video, the process of the container tool is explained. The basic function of Tool Container is to organize tools in a workflow or to group them together. The process of the workflow can be displayed in an expanded or collapsed manner. The container tool can be disabled to prevent the tools inside from running.
Lesson 16: Use Comment & Container Tool for Documentation
In this video, the purpose of the Comment and Container tool for documentation is explained. By definition, the comment tool is used to add annotations/notes or images to explain the process for later references. Likewise, by definition container tools allows to group elements an also helps to expand or collapse features.
Lesson 17: Use Multi-Row Formula tool to fill down values from row values above
In this video, the process of how the multi-row formula tool is used to fill down values from the above row values is explained. You need an input data tool first, from its preview you can see that there are empty values in the data. To fill these values, type multi-row in the search box and connect it to the input tool. Now apply the necessary formulas to it to fill the null or empty values.
